Event: Comrades Marathon 2019
Date: Sunday, 09 June 2019
Fundraising target: R15000
In February 2019 my 7 year old son, Martin, was diagnosed with moderate to severe hearing loss in the higher frequencies. A week later he received his first set of hearing aids. There are other children that are not as lucky as Martin and I would like to use my running to highlight the challenges that they face.
The Comrades Marathon has always been a race that I wanted to run. After a 16 year break from running I decided to start again specifically with the Comrades Marathon in mind. My chance came in 2016 when I moved from Marshstrand to Gonubie.
I have run 2 Comrades Marathons, one “up-run” and one “down-run”. Both years were hampered by injuries, a glute and then a lower shin injury in 2017 and peroneal tendinopathy of the right foot in 2018. In 2017 I had a good run, even with the injury, and finished in 7 hours 47 minutes. The down-run in 2018 was an absolute disaster. My injury prevented me from training for part of April and all of May. Even though I was not able to run, I cycled every day, hoping that I would at least be able to maintain my fitness. I decided to run Comrades anyway and finished in 9 hours 43 minutes. I went through Drummond (44.27km) in 3:40:43 but because of starting so fast and lack of training I was reduced to walking the last 23km. I ended up in high care for 4 days with 30% liver and kidney function.
This year the running is going really well. I trained for the Buffs Marathon and finished in 2 hours 49 minutes which for me is a new personal best and reached my aim of running just under 100km/week. I took a week break after Buffs to recover, just doing a few short slow runs, and then gradually picked up again over the next two weeks. I have since started my 7 week intensive training period in preparation for Comrades 2019. My aim is to pick up my weekly mileage to 150km/week, running 2 long runs of 55-65km and my other Sunday long runs between 35km and 45km. If I can maintain my level of training and all goes to plan I believe I will be able to finish Comrades this year in a sub-7 hour time.
Please sponsor me to run Comrades 2019 for the Carel du Toit centre in East London. Every cent will assist them in their mission to teach pre-school deaf children to speak in the hearing world.

Doing it for ...
Carel du Toit Centre, East London
Carel du Toit Centre is a pre-school where deaf children learn to speak. Once a child is diagnosed with a hearing loss, their journey with us begins. We start with parent guidance, where we teach parents to elicit language from their child. The child starts in the pre-school class anywhere from 18 months-2 years. We follow a pre-school curriculum; however it is centred around language. The children receive a holistic education. Our programme includes music, ball skills and speech therapy. A volunteer speech therapist comes in twice a week. We give the children 3 meals a day at the centre, and for many of them, this is the only food they receive in a day. Our main aim is that our children would learn to speak, and take their place in a hearing world, be on a par with their hearing peers, and attend mainstream schools. Read More...
